I think you're probably right. And because they come in email I get the feeling (and have had the feeling) the perception the individual has a voice to say no is diminished.

I will say, a lot of the running content I followed took them a long time to build up (Citius, Strength Running, etc). So I could imagine the idea of starting completely fresh is hard for small teams/individuals.

It really got insufferable. I started blocking 1-2 per day and then found so many that I was never notified about. Makes you wonder if the check marks allow them to circumvent certain notifications...
