Excessive, uncontrolled growth of filamentous bacteria reduce efficiency of wastewater treatment and the preventive measures used so far incur high costs and can have a negative impact on the environment.

Thanks to the method developed at the Jagiellonian University , consisting of applying rotifers feeding on filamentous bacteria, their excessive growth can be strongly limited.

The scientists Agnieszka Pajdak-Stós, Ph.D., and Edyta Fiałkowska, Ph.D., from the Institute of Environmental Sciences at the Jagiellonian University Department of Biology, have developed a biological method of reducing activated sludge bulking.
