Turns out that emotional valence impacts the level of vocal individuality - some parameters remain stable indicators of ID across emotional states.

Highlights from the published manuscript Interaction of vocal individuality and emotional valence was studied in 7 ungulates. Positive calls carried more identity information than negative ones. Which parameters kept high PIC values across contexts was species-specific. This indicates a pattern of vocal identity-valence interaction across species.

🔊Sth I've been playing around for nearly 2 years and dropped now, too lazy to write a preprint for null results: temporal/rhythmic structure of little auks' classic call doesn't seem to carry neither sex nor partnership info (pDFA, XGboost, S-UMAP vis + densities). ID coding updated.

A very basic graphical abstract of the paper, showing three birds signing songs at a closer and larger distance: the closest birds are more dissimilar! There's also a text that reads: Yellowhammer males use individual isochronic rhythms in their songs. Close neighbours use different rhythms, and this dissimilarity decreases with distance: further neighbours sound more alike.

Caption reads: Knowing the emotional states of others can also be useful - for example, alert us if there's food or predators present. Turns out, little auk calls carry this information. Positive calls are shorter and of a higher frequency than negative ones. They also have more energy in the higher frequencies. This is also true for your chicks, in their first week after hatching.
