Why did the Synod try and outlaw this? because it was 'unseemely to be used in any true Christian kirk, where there is preacheing and profession of the comfortable resurrection of the dead' (MacTavish, ed., Synod of Argyll Minutes i, 61)

A source, c.1607, talks of Lowland Scottish soldiers at Stornoway being besieged by the men of Lewis. During a night attack on the Lowland fort at Stornoway, many Lewismen were killed by the defenders. At daybreak, the Lewismen 'stall[e] away with ane heavie corinach' (Plantation & Civility, p 381).
