Have been thinking about continuing relevance of Dada artist George Grosz's political critiques. His scathing 1926 painting "Eclipse of the Sun" portrays alliance between feckless political & military leaders and capitalist financiers. Grosz, branded "degenerate" by the Nazis, fled to the US in 1933

Excited to present this great essay by Ashanty Rosario, a talented young journalist who attends Newtown High School in Queens, about how she's experienced the arrival of AI in the classroom.

"These programs have destroyed much of what tied us together as students."

Same applies to painting !
How to write: Stop not writing. Keep your butt in the chair. Write really bad small sections of the whole—passages, moments, episodes, memories—til you have an incredibly shitty 1st draft. Then take out the boring parts, the lies and pretensions. Then write a better 2nd draft.

A thread devoted to Jacob Lawrence, one of the great American artists of the 20th century, born #OnThisDay in 1917. First up, one of my favorite paintings by him: Sidewalk Drawings, which celebrates visual power of human mark making with two girls exuberantly drawing in chalk on a city sidewalk

Each mark a reaction to the last. A conversation between intention and accident. Guided by repetition while leaving room for the unexpected turn. Trusting the hand.

In my experience, it works best to maintain at least a 3:1 drawing to thinking ratio. Draw, draw, draw, think. Anything less than that invites analysis paralysis (for me, anyway).

Fènghuáng 鳳凰 is a mythological bird that disappears during times of political corruption.

They only reappear before humans after a transition to new leadership and an era of peace and justice.
