This is silly. He feels political affiliation for Milei. This is a trash yanqui take that IME reads as ignorant, privileged condescension to Argentines. USians know 1 thing about their history and smugly repeat it, while (IME) many Argies have a nuanced understanding of US history and politics.

And if we're at the "sky fairy" stage of argument I think I'm gonna check out. I think it's basically a good thing that our society has treated religious convictions seriously and tried to accommodate them.

erm, first of all, this assumes that everyone affected by taking away the priest penitent privilege would has raped a child, which obviously would not be true. There are a lot of mortal sins; there are a lot of things that are illegal.

Court-mandated therapy is a wrinkle. To my knowledge (maybe incomplete), there isn't a mandate that you be honest with your court-mandated therapist. I *think* the only situation in which perceived dishonesty could hurt you is if you're being evaluated for sentencing, but I could be wrong.

You're free to choose Catholicism in the sense that you are not compelled by *law*, but if you have been raised a believing Catholic you are compelled in other ways. You can't just change your religious belief on a dime. A sincere belief that you must do X or go hell is compulsion.
July 19, 2025 at 1:41 PM
I instinctively agree with you, but I can think of a reason: you go voluntarily, to help yourself (unless you're already in the court system). If you're a believing Catholic, and you've committed a mortal sin, you must confess or go to hell.

I'be been vegan and (now for a long time) omnivore and meat-eaters are far more preachy and aggressive than vegans. I did finally meet a preachy, aggressive vegan (he was pretty relentless about comparing factory farming to rape in a convo I couldn't duck out of), but he's the only one I remember.

I have been back in the US for a little over a week and I found Dr. Pepper-flavored bundt cakes at Walmart and they were incredible and restored my love for my country.

I mean, I'm sure the Trump admin makes up numbers freely, but, what? I was able-bodied on Medicaid. You get on Medicaid because you're low-income, not because you're disabled.

It took 5 days to find Luigi.

I am sorry to hear this. I just dipped over to LinkedIn where I saw the remove the squid post and I quite literally laughed out loud.

I am really struggling to generate a link to that article that does doesn't have my university library proxy redirect in it, but you can google, "How the NIH dominates the world's health research — in charts"

Also, I don't know the source of the above chart, or what is included in "research and development," but considering only biomedical research, the situation is more dramatic.

The relative heights of the bars will change, but the absence of US funding does not create new outside-the-US funding such that the world could absorb US scientists. That was his point. The cuts are also coming at a moment when Europe must rearm because US security guarantees are meaningless.

(Both for error correction, obviously, but also for helping me explore the space of my options in Spanish. I don't tend to feel that I need this in English, but people who have a harder time writing might also find it helpful in their native one, as long as they make themselves compose.)

I wrote a little humor piece for class the other day that my teacher told me she thought was worthy of publication. Maybe she was being a little overly positive (Argentines can be excessively generous with praise), but it would not have been possible to produce work of that quality without the LLM.
April 27, 2025 at 4:12 PM
LLMs are fantastic, better than any other automated tool, for explaining very colloquial writing on sites like Reddit. You can plop a screenshot of a meme in and get that explained too. (That can be useful in your own language, too.)
April 27, 2025 at 4:07 PM
It's not just for plopping your text in and having it rewritten, either. If you ask it for options it can function like a very souped-up thesaurus and explain a lot of nuances about why to choose one word or another. When it makes grammar or usage corrections, it can explain why.

It's great for non-native speakers of many languages. I'm a non-native Spanish speaker and I love it for working on my writing.
April 27, 2025 at 4:05 PM
Love Hard Fork; appreciate your work; discourse around AI on this site is unhinged.

The bare assertions some make about what an LLM could never know or feel are just that--assertions. We don't understand how consciousness arises in organic life; it's not firm ground for strong claims about LLMs.
