The CPI-CPIM split is perceived to be congruent to the Sino-Soviet split in the sixties. There were ideological reasons of course. CPI was seen as nationalist and pro-soviet, while CPIM was perceived to be pro-PRC.

Still follows Marxist-Leninist organising principles, it's not a one party state after all.
