Two weeks ago I returned from a work trip to Rijeka—a small stretch of land where history has run wild over the past century: Austria-Hungary, the Regency of Carnaro, the Free State of Fiume, Italy, Yugoslavia, Croatia. What a CV!

Slovakia was shelled for the last time on 26 March 1945. My grandfather almost lost his life on that day: he survived a Soviet air raid on Nitra only thanks to his brave aunt who covered him with her body during bombing (she became one of the 345 victims). (1/2)

I travel to Ústí nad Labem, one of the centers of the former Sudetenland, quite often. The architecture of the historic center was marked by two disasters: first by aerial bombing during WW2, and then by the communists. This is the view of Ústí's better part from the hotel. Morning vs. night.

What I have in common with Slovak democracy is that we are almost equally old (or young?). From the Belém Tower, the starting point of Portuguese sailors, I wish it to finally discover its better self on occasion of its 35th birthday. 🇨🇿🇸🇰 #velvet
