Huge fan of the changes Steam has been making to store pages. mp4/webm support is huge, and the wider screen is good too. I'm sure some people will be annoyed that they have to re-do pages to fit the new formatting, but the end result is way better.

My personal favorite demo from the ANZ indie showcase is 'Spyrit Walker', a very promising retro horror fps. Fun gameplay, cool setting and atmosphere, and the demo was long enough to get a real feel for the game. Easy Recommend.

This weekend, check out a bunch of cool games from Kiwi and Aussie devs in the ANZ indie showcase!
I'm stoaked to be included, but even more stoaked to see what everyone else has been cooking up

Got the shock pistol implemented!
It's not much of a weapon, but it's better than nothing.

I never used to participate in Nextfest before I started game dev. I was really missing out.

Having a couple of beers and playing a bunch of interesting demos is a fun way to spend an evening. You never know when you'll find gold.

I added a secrets found counter to the demo end screen.
If anyone can get that counter to 3, let me know. I'm pretty sure no-one has found them all so far.
In fact, most players in the playtest didn't find a single one.
Two have items, one has extra lore. One is stupid.

With a public demo release, the temptation to keep pushing out tiny updates for small changes is very strong.

But repacking the entire game just to fix a single typo would be insane, so I've gotta restrain myself until there are a few things at once.

Gotta say though, as much the asset creation process is a huge pain in the ass, It's so good when you have them all sitting there in engine.

It's like having a box full of organized legos you can use to build whatever you want.

I have an entire separate folder for the fleshy stuff now. It was too confusing having it spread out among the other assets.

This is unrelated to game dev, but my mate's band just released their first album!

I reckon it's pretty good. Have a listen if you like.

If anyone was wondering if the glowstick in Abject Abyss is a reference to Penumbra, it sure is.
The Penumbra series were some of the first horror games I ever played, and they've had a big influence on me. I loved the idea of the glowstick so much I had to put it in my game too.

The smallest effect of the playtest, is that now you can ride the vacuum robot at the start of the game. Multiple people mentioned this in feedback somehow.

The Abject Abyss playtest is going very well! Big thanks to everyone who's given feedback so far.
It's been overall very positive,(which is nice,) but the negative responses have all had good actionable criticism too. That's how you know it's a good batch of testers.

Just when I think the playtest build is ready, BAM, huge issue with PSO caching.

And I also found a typo, so that's gotta be fixed too.

I can write a whole bunch of lore in my notes real fast. The ideas come quick and are easy to fit together.

But when it comes time to actually write any text that will be in the game, dialogue or otherwise, hours pass and I realize I've only done a couple of in-game emails worth.

In horror I prefer to keep the monsters a surprise, but
I decided having no sign of any creature at all on my steam page was probably turning people away.

So I added a single screenshot of one WIP thing from later in the game, and that one change has already had a huge impact.

Adventure game protagonists are something else. They only see obstacles and solutions. Weird growths in hallways don't phase them at all.

Modeling and texturing a writhing mass of disfigured flesh can be a surprisingly relaxing process

Abject Abyss: Making Monsters
A horror game doesn’t necessarily need any monsters in it. That said, Abject Abyss has several. If you have any experience with game dev, this wont be anything new to you. But for everyone else I ho.....

Everyone expects monsters to break down a door, but sometimes it makes more sense for them to just open it normally.

Start of the game felt a bit static, so I added a little Vacuum robot.
