First time as an editor: the first two reviewers I invited on a manuscript agreed immediately. Normally I need to invite 10+ reviewers for two to accept, and it takes ages. Thanks to them!

L'équipe "Atmosphères et Surfaces Planétaire" du labo d'astrophysique de Bordeaux a décidé de boycotter l'HCERES. Et ça vaut aussi pour les AAP, mais en astro c'est un peu particulier.

Journal of Eye Movement Research (the first journal I published in!), which used to be published by the University of Bern, has been transferred to predatory MDPI... I'm sad :(

C'est vrai que ça marche bien : tu exportes depuis HAL la liste de tes publis au format Endnote, tu ouvres le fichier dans VOSViewer et voilà !

Gender differences in spatial navigation skills increase with age, and even more so in countries with greater gender inequality, as estimated by the Gender Inequality Index. 6/7

In particular, the GAWI Health and Environment subscores are strongly correlated with the effect of age on wayfinding performance. 5/7

We find that the social, economic, and environmental well-being of older adults, as measured by the Global AgeWatch Index (GAWI), is negatively associated with age-related decline in spatial ability. 4/7

While the age-related cognitive decline pattern is similar across countries, the rate of this decline presents stark differences (Hedge’s g from 0.59 in Japan to 1.76 in Mexico). 3/7

We quantified the age-related decline in spatial ability in 715,295 participants from 46 countries using the mobile video game Sea Hero Quest. 2/7

⚠️ New preprint !
« Social determinants of cognitive aging trajectories across 39 countries »
Some people in their 80s have cognitive abilities similar to many 30-year-olds, others are severely diminished.
How comes?

We show that there is a causal effect of education on wayfinding ability. We used the 1972 reform increasing the minimum school leaving age in the UK as a natural experiment, and applied a regression discontinuity design.

The effect of education was different across countries, from near-zero in India to significant in Romania. We did not find any relationship between the education effect size of countries and economic indicators such as GDP per capita.
November 10, 2023 at 2:21 PM
We used the video game Sea Hero Quest to quantify the wayfinding ability of 397,162 people across 38 countries. We showed that education level was positively associated with wayfinding ability. This difference was stronger in older participants and increased with task difficulty.
