Bonjour,

Basically, the mobs that took over the streets of Tehran were thugs paid by CIA and led by religious men like ayatollah Behbahani (whom had the complet trust of CIA and MI6). The police and the army (led by Fazlollah Zahedi) were acting according to a plan made up by the CIA and MI6.

For the sources, you can now have a complet access to the Foreign Relation of the United States online. There are many very interesting articles as well, written by the archivists Malcolm Byrnes, who is working there.

There was also the MI6 involved in this coup. They orchestrated their part in the coup from Cyprus.

To me, specifically on the coup, the most accurate book is Behind the 1953 Coup in Iran by Ali Rahnema. For the economic aspects, I would recommand Petroleum and Progress in Iran by Gregory Brew.

But to do so, Mossadegh had to strenghthen trades with USSR, which he did in his last months at power. So Mossadegh was seen as a way to bring communists to power in both way, even he the economy did not collapse.

It is absolutly that. USA government thought that the oilless economy Mossadegh was trying to set up would led to the collapse of Iran and thus, would bring the Tudeh to power. In fact the oilless economy was a succes and would bring Iran out of its dependance toward western economies.

My sources were composed of archives from the Ministry of Industry, of Foreign Affairs, and from Total (Compagnie Française des Pétroles at that time). They are very interesting to understand what is going on from a powerless actor's perspective (and yet they got 6% in the Consortium at the end)

Mossadegh got really closer to the Soviets. If USA couldn't let USSR get iran oil, it is because the Soviets didnt have enough oil to make a third world war. With iran oil, and even more with middle east oil, they could. So to prevent this war to be even possible, the made the coup.

It's the reason why USA pushed so that they do not invade. The tactict then changed to suffocate Iran to bring a regime change which failed. The coup occured because USA and England couldn't let the Soviets take over iran oil. Yet, in the early 1953 and especially the last months before the coup,

You're right. Unfortunatly, I have to make short cuts here. The British brought troops at the Iraqi border and later in Cyprus, ready to invade, in addition to the blocus. They really wanted to go, but an article from the 1921 soviet-iran treaty would have given the Soviets a casus belli

I studied the Iran oil nationalisation for two years. In the French archives, the threat of a war is not a tale at all but a real possibility. Especially in 1951 and 1952. It was to avoid it (not only that, that's true) that the coup occured in 1953.
