Certain kinds of media simply have eerie and ominous undertones that are suggestive of things far darker than what traditional horror could embody. It comes out of unexpected places too, one of the instances I could recall is watching the indie horror game "my eyes deceive".

And somehow the paraphrasing makes the incident sound much more dramatic and horrific that it actually was.
