These artisanal / mercantile scenes are much more powerful and meaningful to me than even the most spectacular battle sarcophagus or mythological scene. It's a question of human contact - Trophimas seems real and immediate, there in his shoemaker's booth.

If you happen to be curious about the religious orientation of Trophimas and/or his friends, you might want to check out the ALT text. If you happen to be curious about the sexual orientation of Trophimas, compare the number of women on his sarcophagus to the number of scantily-clad men.

There's something insincere about this funerary altar which I go into in the ALT text on the image above. I'm not saying you should be curious about it. But if you are, you can easily read about it without straining your eyes.

I'm curious because as you know there aren't many authentic martyr stories and this shrine is very early.

I love it and want a floor of it.

Any specific martyrs?

If you'd like to know a little more about this stupendous opus sectile floor, the ALT button on the photo describes the marbles and design of the pavement.

This white outfit and hat, however, would look fabulous on you. A simple, unaffected peasant girl, fresh as a rose.

I remember a highly aggressive old woman at the door taking "donations" and shrieking "NO FOTO! NO FOTO!" if she saw a flash go off.
