My grandad died before I was born, but as a young child I remember brothers Percy and Reggie (there had been 9 siblings altogether). But not until much later had I any sense of what they (& their parents) must have endured. Thinking of Edgar prompted this:

Thanks for the clarification - I hope that ‘what I’m used to seeing’ showed I wasn’t suggesting right vs wrong - presumably both are arbitrary impositions on a primarily oral form?

Layout in that link places on separate lines what I’m used to seeing as two half-lines with two stressed syllables each & separated by a caesura that alliterate with each other. This (with ModEng translation) uses the latter form skaldic.org/m.php?i=1436... Lovely to reconnect with this stuff!

I studied Old English as part of my degree in the late 80s at university and my first thought was it sounded similar to how our tutor read OE poetry - but I’ve had a long time to forget the details.

I didn’t notice as the sentence works perfectly well with ‘carvery’ (I assumed the lower case ‘c’ was a typo).
