Such a lovely looking, carefully crafted film. Used to love John Irving books too, not sure why I stopped reading them. Are the 'new' ones (ha, 1990s on) as good? I've got a few but never got round to them.

Re: going small. Clement & Le Frenais masters at doing best work when almost no plot. Don't find out football score, two blokes have a night in in a cell, first series of Auf Wiedersehen (Dennis goes swimming, that'll do for hour of prime-time ITV). Great characters don't need too much plot/action.

Dont know why 'About things today and fallen leaves' always gets me, but it does. And guessing this is from the box set - isn't it a wonderful thing. Brilliant storytelling.
