South African news reports that all passengers were from Gaza and somehow allowed to leave from Israel’s Ramon airport without their passports being stamped. How this was done without at a minimum Israeli collusion is the question, as is who would want to put the SA government in a sticky spot…

I am honestly confused why the airlines are being asked to choose what flights to reduce when the issue is ATC staffing at airports. Is there something else happening first, like the FAA working with airports to compile a real time staffing forecast provided daily to airlines? Naive question…

US books dozens of seats for Afrikaner ‘refugees’, but only three pitch up | News24
Far fewer ‘refugees’ arrived for their flights than were catered for. Despite this, the US government has targeted resettlement of 6 000 people by the end of November.

Thank you for doing good journalism - bringing people’s voices to the fore when political expediency seeks to bury them. (The thread and article are both worthwhile and fascinating reads.)

At this rate in a decade there’ll be public health protocols for all flights from the U.S. to manage the spread of vaccine preventable diseases. (Assuming sanity isn’t allowed to prevail.) There are so many reasons governments usually buy or subsidise vaccines.

It was a double tap strike - a deliberate targeting of the emergency workers and journalists who rushed to rescue and record the first massacre. This is a(nother) war crime.

My bad for not reading the Wired article to the end - was peeved after reading the NYT version which does not mention the possible generic price tag at all. Many more kudos to Wired.

There’s a new Lancet preprint from Wednesday that points out the actual cost could be as low as $25 instead of +$24k (papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.... ). Ending the global HIV epidemic could be in our reach, if it wasn’t about company profits.
Lenacapavir to Prevent HIV Infection: Updated Estimated Costs of Production for Generic Treatments

And of course Crosby’s original “The Columbian Exchange” from 1972. A revelation in environmental history.

Plagues and Peoples by McNeill - the book that made epi history popular. Though out dated in many ways, it still challenges the reader to consider the critical drivers of history.

There’s a lot to be said about the benefits of ethical and regulated clinical trials pre market release.

She live(d) in a major tourist hotspot which is part of greater Cape Town and priced out of the reach of almost all South Africans, a lasting legacy of South Africa’s apartheid structures. She is only a refugee from her inability to be racist without blowback in South Africa.

So the president decides if the country is at war, can use all government resources to act at will during this state of war, and when “combatants” are forcibly sent elsewhere then their hands are cleaned because they are no longer in the country. Lovely.

International waters begin at 12 NM off Malta. The ship was at 14 NM. The drone/s were either flown there or launched nearby. Either way this is a blatant threat to the region as well an attack on the idea of humanity.

The EU should stand up and say human rights are not negotiable, but its financial support to Tunisia for “migrant control” suggests this is unlikely.

The 21st century global economy of forced migration continues its growth. This expands the EU paying Libya etc to keep migrants away from its shores, Mexico’s payments from the U.S., and of course El Salvador’s fear-focused prisons.

Creating a culture of fear. (Curtailing the willingness to express political opinion that the article mentions was a freedom the U.S. was known for.)

Last night the IDF destroyed the barely-working Baptist Hospital in northern Gaza, again. Targeting healthcare workers and infrastructure is systematic, not a series of mistakes. Killing the paramedics and civil defense crews was never a mistake.

You end up with people considered “alive” if they have the money and resources to chase through what is sure to be a labyrinth of catch 22’s if someone decides they are dead to all official systems. Otherwise it’s part of underclass reliant on under the table wages and no legal healthcare.
