I believe there's lots of evidence that Chaucer was an h-dropper, e.g., "myn homcomynge" and h-dropping was found across most of England by 20th century dialectologists, but I've always thought the "an historic" business was a pedant's trick like the "rules" for broad-a in RP.

There were 2 verbs with the root of 'dive' in Old English. One was strong (ablaut) and the other weak ("regular"). The semantic distinction between them was lost and the two verbs collapsed into one with both past tenses survive.

A student told me today that they used ChatGPT to explain my instructions on an assignment. I had bullet-pointed paragraphs explaining what to do in each of 3 parts of the project, and ChatGPT produced a longer list of bullet points, paraphrasing each sentence.
