Building hater/appreciator out of Toronto. He/they. Hates your neighbourhood’s character, yes, specifically yours.
so @joshmatlow.bsky.social has posted a motion that allows councillors to adopt neighbourhood retail in their own wards, effectively allowing the removed attachment to be adopted on a ward-by-ward basis. it's not perfect but it's something!!!

I got some brutal family health news last night so I've spent the day so far in the ravines with Penny (she says hi, btw) to parse. I'm going to try and spend less time online this weekend, but wanted to post some action items re: the upcoming council meeting on Nov. 12.

Despite the circumstances, Joanne and Ryan have made the space feel warm, cosy, and inviting. My favourite part is just how close the traffic is to the front seats; it feels like the odd sort of carved out space you'd find in Tokyo vs. the usual polish here.

They are in the front vestibule that also serves as a lobby for the residential units above, so every night EVERYTHING goes into storage. The ongoing (delayed) construction also means that they are running odd hours to avoid it.

Came across another indie coffeeshop coping with unusual circumstances last night...remember how the new age crystal store was a holdout at Mirvish Village? Well, a multi-vendor market has opened in its place, including the physical location for Spirited Tarts.

Two blocks from each other on the same street (Palmerston). Remember: what is at stake here is if Emily Rose goes under and is converted to residential, going back is nigh impossible—a community amenity lost for good.

Always nice to hear from fans

I submitted this letter into the public record ealier today telling the committee we had over 2600 signatures on our petition. When I do my deputation tomorrow, I will gleefully be telling them we have over (at least ) 2700.

Got to the subway station 40 minutes early, boosted my mood for the whole day. What a privilege.

I don't think everyone needs to take up street photography or even choose the mundane subjects I focus on...But I do think it's nice to meditate on simple beauty during your morning commute.

How many petitions and walks does it takes to pass a piece of policy that cranks are mad about but that the general public is overwhelmingly in favour of? Because whatever I did is not enough—still think this has dicey chances.

I’m like if Snow White gave urban walking tours

Three neighbourhood tours in two days. After hours of having to be “on” in overstimulating environments, can’t wait for the quiet peace of my apartment.

The quiet peace of my apartment:

Tried the new Italian restaurant Miss Vickie’s…I’d give them each a 7. Good, but I won’t be thinking about any of them in a year.

On the Annex FB page I tried to bring the temp down on this issue and, in the comments, offered to run the neighbourhood retail Jane’s Walk again to help boost the businesses that were leery of this change. Currently I am planning two walks, a session each on Oct 25/26. Stay tuned.

Came across this lovely group of older environmentalists the other day. For all the boomer doomerism online and lamentations that we're ruled by a gentoncracy, worth touching grass and meeting people fighting those narratives every so often.

Two pics didn't upload for some reason on this one but here they are--like why oppose colour, vibrancy, and life?

I do, actually, find it aggravating when people suggest this city is fundamentally broken. It has issues, but what they need are practical and considered solutions applied by those who love this city, its complexity, and its contradictions.

In other words, one rule above all:
October 7, 2025 at 2:42 PM
This is a city of immense promise and opportunity. When faced with a political and economic climate like the one we're in, it is easy to be reactionary. And it is easy to be goaded into reacting. But the solutions are there and can foster the very best of what this city has.
October 7, 2025 at 2:42 PM
Do we currently face hard challenges? Yes. But those have practical solutions. Some suburbanite complains downtown smells like pee? That's not bc Chow is a communist. That's a years-long issue with public washrooms, homelessness, and addiction treatment.

Abandoning "Diversity our Strength" (adopted formally in 1997, but effectively always true) because some people--many who don't even live here--claim *recent and temporary* geopolitical/policy factors have caused friction is preposterous. We have a blueprint for vitality already.

I've been quite angry on Twitter for the last week and have been trying to parse it...some thoughts:

Toronto's problems largely stem from the cost-of-living crisis. A crisis, in part, caused by the simple fact that people *want* to live here. Opportunity, culture, and fulfilment abound
