Critically, this is a major component of totalitarian dehumanization. If the opposition is fake, then the “bad actors” can be tortured and killed as symbols rather than seen as fellow humans being murdered by the state.

All other things aside, “MakeMemphisMatter” as a hashtag is pretty telling. Either they know Memphis doesn’t matter nationally much, and are butthurt, or they thought “MakeMemphisGreatAgain” couldn’t even recall a fantasy time when it was great.

This is the underexamined part. No one is asking why he was targeted for a device search. I cannot believe it was random. Are they attaching socials to passports? Seems plausible

I get what you are saying but the how/why is not adding up here. They don’t just search the devices of everyone. They targeted him for a reason knowing what they would find. What was the reason? Linking socials and passports?

Why was his phone searched I wonder? Sounds like they are already applying social media account identification to passports and automatically flagging those people? The how here would be very enlightening and I wish the Guardian had been more curious about that

As someone who grew up evangelical, scared shitless that Jesus would return and I wasnt saved hard enough, RB is a silly caricature of that fear. Anyone seriously believing it needs to be professionally treated for the presumably extreme trauma that caused them to give it credence

It is absolutely in their interest to not understand how sovereign debt works because it destroys their entire premise and therefore their ability to grift. If we decided to cast off the debt they would be the ones with their pants down while we benefit
