1) To be a trendsetter

2) To embarrass your kids because your father embarrassed you the same way (vengeance by proxy)

“Functional” is the best word for it, I think. Not prone to floweriness or lyricism, but pragmatic. A touch tell-y at times, I personally feel, but then I’m pretty strict about that (and it may well be a stylistic preference anyway).
