Ive never really heard the term "new memory" used before; Im referring, roughly, to the view that if a person remembers childhood experiences (typically but not always traumatic) in adulthood that theyd never before had any awareness or knowledge of, those memories are extremely unlikely to be true

Yes, I think this is an extremely valuable resource with, just like you said, a very nuanced & balanced approach that threads the needle of being scientifically rigorous while also deeply respectful of the experiences so many people report having & sensitive to how meaningful people say they are.

Really? Plenty of academics argue that recovered memories are not a bona fide phenomenon.

Im definitely not saying that such memories should categorically and uncritically always be accepted as literally historically accurate. But at the same time, there's a there there that we need to understand better. These experiences aren't all fantasies and false memories. @trpwolff.bsky.social

However we interpret it, it's empirically well established by now that spontaneous recall (& often vivid reliving) during a psychedelic experience of traumatic memories that the person had before then been unaware of is a very commonly reported phenomenon
