Now that the 8100 DARTs are being repainted you can see where the all the components are. They’re really nicely labelled.

notable examples include Lisbon and the former Hill of Howth Tram

furthermore, Cork had some north-south tram routes before

Yes, and it’s not going to get better until we invest in the physical infrastructure or reduce frequency. The problems include the non-stop services, Howth junction and Ossory Rd / Amiens St junctions north of Connolly.
There is a fix, along with electrification, but that’s not ideal either:
A line diagram of train services in a hour on the northern line into Connolly Station. Each line represents one train per hour. 12 trains per hour are marked as using the line, 11 all-stops and 1 express. The Howth branch is spectated and would see 6tph.

A little preview of a map of a better Irish railway network I’m working on at the moment.
What’s the point? mostly a fun exercise, but it’s ensuring that all towns over 5k have a station, which throws up some interesting results.

Current network vs mine:
