Despite the contradictions so central to the decisions of various justices, and the switching sides such contradictions require, the reasoning in Hill and Hicks are of a piece. Instead of understanding public space to be “agonistic” and “associational” and the citizenship that forms in it as being a product of the collective actions of people, American Courts, led by the Supreme Court, are codifying a model of public life that is the antithesis of public space. We are, each and every one of us, radically individual, completely “free agents” to use Marx's term. As free agents, we are “free to collide with one another and engage in exchange.” But we do not want to collide with one another; we want to move freely through public space, encased in an impregnable bubble of property (made real through law), and watched over by a network of surveillance cameras, their operators, and the state. We want – and expect – to feel safe at all times.

I see this sort of take a lot and I always think - is it critical reading skills that have collapsed or is it that you've just got way more people coming through the door marked 'public discourse', or a bit of both, you know? Even the average uni class has way more people in it now than 20 years ago

The Telegraph has just run an article effectively attacking Kathryn Yusoff for writing a scholarly monograph based on the analysis of historical documents and a theoretical framework. i.e. being an academic? That's treated as having equal weight and significance as opinions like this based on vibes:

I wish people would understand what trolling is in this context - the misunderstanding is a denial tactic, not stupidity. They know it drives you potty when they misquote antifascist media, they know that making that media seem futile and lose traction helps them, not you.

You literally made up some people to be mad at, in a way that feeds a right wing culture war whose ultimate victims (because they are the current targets) will be the environmental humanities scholars who you purport to champion.

Aside from some of the weak metaphors in it, this from the Carole C piece is a very good example of taking a relative commonplace and attributing it to the right as an example of strategic mastermindery

Abstract: The Basilica of Sacré-Coeur, which strategically and symbolically dominates the northern skyline of Paris, has a strange and tortured history. Conceived of in the course of the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–71, its construction was seen by many as an act of penitence for the moral decadence of the Second Empire of Napoleon III as well as for the supposed excesses of the Paris Commune of 1871. The cult of the Sacred Heart and the movement to build a Basilica for its glorification drew much of its support from ultraconservative Catholics as well as from those espousing the cause of monarchist restoration. Legislation pushed through at the height of the political reaction which followed the Commune turned the construction of the Basilica into a national project. This legislation permitted those in command of the project to select the heights of Montmartre as a site for its construction. The Basilica was thus built upon the very spot where some of the most significant opening and closing events of the Paris Commune occurred. In the years that followed the laying of the foundation stone in 1875, the predominantly republican population of Paris sought to stop what they perceived as a manifestation of reactionary monarchism from being erected in their midst. They all but succeeded, in 1882, in emasculating the whole project. The Basilica, finally completed and consecrated in 1919, was for many years seen as a provocation to civil war and to this day is still interpreted as a political symbol.
