An excellent novel overall. The only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is the translation. I much prefer Szabó’s work as translated by Ali Smith. Still a fantastic read! #womenintranslation #literaryfiction #historicalfiction

Just finished. I went in blind and I’m glad I did! Very thought provoking and the author’s use of symbolism and imagery helped frame this narrative in a way that really speaks to the social climate of the 30s. I will read more from Wright very soon! I’ll be thinking about this one for awhile!
