We are given the maths question ‘Integrate the fraction with a numerator of x and denominator of x+4 with respect to x’ The numerator x is rewritten as x + 4 - 4, by introducing a zero pair +4 - 4.

There is one bottle of wine in each region of the Venn diagram.

Each prisoner drinks from 4 bottles of wine, as shown.

If no-one dies, bottle A must be poisoned.

If everyone dies, bottle H must be poisoned.

If only prisoners 1 and 2 die, bottle G must be poisoned.

etc…
The solution to the Poisoned Wine Puzzle can be modelled using a Venn Diagram with 3 circles. This Venn Diagram has 8 regions with exactly one bottle in each region. Each prisoner will drink from 4 bottles of wine. If we know which prisoners die, we can identify the specific region of the Venn diagram and hence we know which bottle of wine is poisoned.
