A short treatise on magic: - magic use is based entirely on telepathy and generally happens between two entities: the transmitter and the receiver - the magic must originate from the transmitter and must be accepter by the receiver’s subconscious in order to work properly (similar to a closed circuit). - magical spells and knowledge can only be imparted on others using this telepathic method since it does not really translate verbally. - magic can be transmitted/received by anyone, though some have a more natural predisposition to it than others. Bee is a quick learner since her father trained her in magic reception from an early age so she could sustain the spell that keeps her alive. Exceptions to these rules: Curses - Powerful mages/groups of mages can, in some cases, break through a person’s subconscious and force magic into their psyche: these are called curses. - Curses are widely frowned upon among magic users and using them is considered a grave transgression by many. - In extreme cases, curses can damage the afflicted’s ability to practice magic permanently. This is the reason for Puppycat’s inability to fully teach Bee magic on his own. -Non-magic users are easier to curse since their subconscious is not trained to push back against the intruder. Loop Spells: - loop spells are self-inflicted spells where the caster acts as both the transmitter and the receiver. - loop spells are very dangerous to perform as the endless loop of magic exchange can only be put to a stop by an external entity, not the caster themselves. Summoning Spells: - Summoning spells work work similarly to simple two-way magic exchange but involves a third party that when summoned, completes the magical circuit. - bee and puppycat use this method to summon tempghost- a magical entity that can open interdimensional wormholes. - they travel through these wormholes so that bee can learn a variety of new spells (ones that puppycat cannot teach her) from magic users across several dimensions.

Puppycat While not officially part of the royal guard, Puppycat assists Bee in her duties by accompanying her on her patrols and 'side quests'. Nobody really seems to mind his presence. Puppycat has been placed under a telepathic curse by the warlocks that are after him. However, constant telepathic magic is difficult to maintain, especially at long distances. Because of this, the magic falters at times, allowing for some limited shapeshifting ability. This can be at will with enough telepathic pushback, but is usually amorphous shifting that happens at random. Bee convinced him to shift into a horse so that she wouldn't need to maintain her own- he does it begrudgingly despite not being a huge fan of being used for transportation. Prior to meeting the princess and being cursed, Puppycat lived a nomadic lifestyle with Bird and Violet, traveling and doing odd jobs to earn their living. During this time, he was able to learn some telepathic magic from Bird, which he does his best to pass onto Bee now despite the gaps in his knowledge.
