Made a documentary about the legendary 1970's rock radio station in Jackson, Mississippi. Watch "WZZQ the Movie" streaming on PBS.org. https://wzzqthemovie.com
Check out the old Louisiana Power and Light building next to the ferry landing in Algiers (across the river from Jackson Square.)

What an interesting observation. I’m going to pay closer attention to the bumpers here in Central Mississippi and see if I spot any radio station stickers.

That makes sense. Yet at this point, four decades on, wouldn’t freeform and AOR formats evoke nostalgia as well? There are classic rock stations out there but there are more country stations. Maybe some rock fans became country fans and the rest are just listening to CDs.

In Mississippi, WZZQ was sold and went country in 1981 as MISS 103 and has been topped the local market ever since. That trend seems to have played out in other places as well. Mystery to me. Oh well.

Yet country stations thrived and still seem to. Why?

True, and there was value in that. So odd to see the playlists back then. I made a documentary about a freeform rock station in Mississippi in the 1970’s but the top 40 station there at the time played everything from the Beatles to Ferlin Husky.
