I have a weekly sketch date with my friend and we just hang and sip wine and sketch or paint whatever we feel like. Since I'm in my bird era I made a blue jay.

I wasn't done with magpies. These ones are better and in goache.

Edmonton picked the magpie as our bird which feels right. So tonight I painted a magpie.
A watercolour magpie on a fence. But it's a little squat but the colour is deeply satisfying so I call this one a win.

My tree era will continue but I am also entering my bird era. I took yesterday off and painted birds that come to my bird feeder. The bird cam has helped me learn more about the bird ecosystem in my back yard. Both of these were here all winter.
The house sparrows are my most common visitors to my feeder. I would have thought they were two different birds but the male and female are quite distinct. He has some dramatic black spots and she is a nice stripey little brown bird. They are quite noisy and messy little critters. This is a good example of the room to grow my skills. I did improve this with a second pass. These are the house finches and I get excited every time we see that lorilliant red chest on the male. The female is another little brown bird with some different colour patterns from the sparrow. I had no idea we had such pretty birds in our yards. They are much tidier eaters at the bird feeder.

Back in a tree groove.
Finding space for painting is a relief in an anxious world.
Watercolour painting of the tree. I started with watercolour pencils and layered on water colour paint. It gives a nice fullness of colour. Gouche version of the tree. I am still learning how to work with Gouache. This has a warm purple stain underneath. I like how it reflects light differently. Amazing olive tree in Catalonia Spain. At Art Cava where we did a great wine tasting in 2015.

Pi Day might be the best day of the year.
A hand crafted Caramel Chai Apple pie with a perfect flaky crust. The words I "heart" Pi cut into it with cookie cutters because everyone knows I need this cookie cutters. I made I It on March 14 but I definitely had another slice this morning for breakfast. Yum. Pi.

I printed my first linocut print! I was waiting for a tutorial from my friend but I was impatient and just went for it with instructions from a book. I learned a lot already, but the journey starts with a single print.

I set myself a goal of sketching a tree a day while I'm in California. I like this olive so much I drew it twice and I'm really proud of it.
