It's the big one!
The one everyone's heard of. The one most people love. The one that gets discussed most.

Given the terrifying tilt the world is taking it might be time to get your bonnet in a book.

Writing my Substack: A Year of Jane Austen has been a real tonic to take my mind off Trump & the horrors of Hamas.

To read this or not to read this... though I'm no stranger to the loooong novel even so it's a commitment

My weekend read was:
Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
This is only my 2nd time reading this particular novel. I've read the others multiple times except Emma.
Clever send up of Gothic suspense novels yet still manages to be a satisfying story in its own right.

This is superb.
My first read of 2025.

My Christmas tree went up yesterday, it's tiny & very convenient but pretty.
Here between my lemon tree & my lime tree brought inside for the winter.

Devasting.

My beautiful Walnut tree, quite old & somewhat battered.
You can see from this picture which direction the sun comes up but also which direction the prevailing wind comes from.

Once established they are a pretty indestructible shrub tree & have stunning flowers in springtime.
Autumn foliage is also gorgeous going through a range of colours. Mine didn't this year as the weather has been weird.

This is actually my own medlar tree which looks ancient & sprawls through three other trees it's planted with. It's been here a long time & I feel extremely lucky to have one.
In the spring it is covered with the most beautiful flowers.
November 25, 2024 at 3:20 PM
These are medlars
Medlar are fruit from a deciduous shrub or tree. Gorgeous flowers in springtime. It originated from Asia Minor, Turkey, Iran etc.
They taste a bit like toffee apple & pear & date.
The darker ones are ready to eat, cook with, the lighter ones are hard & need to blet.
November 25, 2024 at 2:58 PM
I still have more medlars bletting (ripening) but the pressure is off now that I have 7 and a half jars this year.
November 25, 2024 at 2:40 PM
& finally, the last element of the Medlar Jelly process, delayed by snow.
Boil with sugar until set then put into jars!
I thought these might make good Xmas presents but OH is horrified!
Far too precious to give away, esp since most people have no clue what Medlar Jelly is & won't have a use for it.
