I don’t think the postage prices changed after privatization. During this time the economy was really bad in terms of deflation “spiral” and depressed wages, so chances are the cost of living ratio might have increased.

I get that she is kind of needed to get the story going. But her costuming, makeup, mannerism etc are all so Hollywood-coded. You’d find no woman like that in Japan. Also she’s so competent with perfect English (indications of class and good education) and why is she working in a small office?

I got in, got MA, did PhD coursework and here I am. So it’s all good.

Usually post office workers in local offices are great people. It’s the structural problem that the company doesn’t want to address, including low wages.

Some of them are great, tho. When I applied to grad school I had to send hard copies of my thesis to the school, which is (well…) considered to be the best one in Japan.

My ✉️ was too heavy for the discount. The worker saw the address and said, “sorry, but I see you worked hard and that’s great”.

I see that people may point out pre-privatization era as being corrupt and inefficient. But how much of that changed, seriously? A postal service truck hit my friend’s motorcycle and they were being an absolute pain. They were pressured to deliver with unrealistic quotas and they didn’t care!

I’ve heard about those horrible stories, but fortunately I haven’t experienced it myself. Maybe they have all the info and know that none in my family is wealthy. Oh well
