Dialogue should move your plot forward and develop your characters.

Ask yourself: Why is this scene here? What do I want my readers to know about my characters when it ends? What do I want my characters to know at the end of the scene? (Those aren’t always the same things!)

What do you have to say to your readers? Is it the same as "what's your book about?" I'd argue they're related (sometimes), but what you have to say is going to keep your reader thinking long after they've closed your book.

Agree or disagree? Any examples jump to your mind?

In my experience, there’s no such thing as “always perfect”. So why not try something new when you're stuck? Rewrite a scene from a different POV, use only dialogue, the possibilities are endless!

What approaches work for you?

DYK: I’m not just an editor- I’m writing a book too!

I’m researching butlers in early #mystery novels which means I get to read lots of mysteries! Fortunately, the British Library Crime Classics Collection are republishing lesser known titles, letting me read books I might not have found before!
