A view of Quebec City, as seen from the top of Escalier du Faubourg, on a very cold January day. Oil on canvas, 24” x 30”. #quebec #art #oilpainting #urbanlandscape

Smoke over the city in January. Or is it steam?

I went to the Helen McNicoll retrospective at the MNBAQ, and I was fascinated by her impeccable technique: rays of sun in impasto, rich colours, excellent brushwork. #impressionism

This is Rue Claire-Fontaine in Quebec City, on a very cold winter day. I used to live near this street. It’s painted with water-soluble graphite, an interesting and portable medium. 10” x 12”.

L’Anse-aux-Érables, watercolour, 9” x 12”. A peaceful place I visit regularly with my family. It’s on the shores of the Saguenay River, Quebec.

This is a painting of my dad, who would have celebrated his birthday today. He was a violin maker, and earlier in life, an engineer. In his later years, he had Alzheimer’s. This is inspired by one of the last photos I took of him. He didn’t talk much anymore, but that time he gave us a thumbs up. 1/

This small oil on paper depicts four children—my mother, aunt, and uncles—playing in the sand. Based on a photograph taken by my grandfather, the painting has few details and no faces, focusing instead on the essence of the moment.

This oil on paper depicts a family visit during Christmas, based on an old photograph. I was a baby, sitting on my father’s knees, with my mother seated in front of us. Though I have no memory of this moment, the painting explores the fragmented way we piece together our past.

This painting is inspired by a photograph taken by my maternal grandfather, a gifted photographer and skilled draughtsman. He captured this scene in the Mauricie region, Quebec, in the 50’s. Oil on paper, 9” x 11”.

An oil portrait of my son at 12, wearing his pajamas in the sun on a camping trip. I like how his eyes are visible through his sunglasses, adding a subtle depth to the scene. I’m happy to remember this carefree, stress-free week spent with family and friends.

This 12x18 oil on wood panel was a rare commission. I was drawn to the solitude of the scene, its Hopper-like composition evoking quiet introspection. Muted tones in the background contrast with the subject, enhancing the emotional resonance of being alone. #portraitpainting #contemporarypainting

I attended the opening of an exhibition worth seeing: David Lafrance at Maison des arts de Laval. Such large and generous paintings! Reminded me of David Hockney.

This is a portrait of my daughter at 14, sitting on a chair with our cat. While the cat gazes outside, my daughter looks directly at us, creating an interesting dynamic. The technique blends drawing and painting. This oil painting is 12” x 16” on wood panel. #contemporarypainting

This scene, set in 1950s Montreal, shows my dad as a child standing behind a tricycle, his younger brother happily seated on it, and my grandfather in the background. I was drawn to the dynamic composition of this trio—their positions and interactions bring the scene to life. Oil on paper, 8” x 10”.

This is a small portrait of my dad. I’m not sure how old he looks in the painting, but the reference photo shows him as a teenager, eating an ice cream cone. One day, I plan to paint the entire scene—capturing the defiant way he enjoyed that ice cream.

Large portrait, 30” x 40”, painted on the floor with diluted paint. Inspired by an old, blurry photo of my grandfather. I didn’t know him well, but I was drawn to this expressive, indistinct face—perhaps as a way to reflect on where I come from.

I painted this family portrait upside down, on the floor, to keep it fresh and gestural. It’s painted in one session. It’s an oil painting on paper, 30” x 40”.

A portrait of my grandfather, oil on paper, 9 x 11 inches, 2014. Still one I’m the most happy with. Hoping to be able to paint more of those. (painting by Annelise Gadoury)
