AI fascinates and unsettles us. We laugh at chatbots, debate automation, and struggle to define it: is it a tool, a threat, or something in between? Mary Douglas wrote about things that don’t fit into categories - maybe that’s why AI feels so strange. What do you think?

What should children study?

“I would love for children to study science and math. But also humanities and arts. We are not just creating a computer for the sake of it. What are they interested in? What do they want to create in the world?” Charina Chou @googlequantumai.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“Europe has a very important role to play in #quantumcomputing. Denmark, Netherlands and Finland have really taken a role in here. Europe has a lot of expertise in #cryogenics, wiring and algorithms. Europe has a huge role to play.” Charina Chou @googlequantumai.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“Will #quantumcomputing cure cancer before it breaks the #bitcoin encryption?” 🫣😅

“Ideally, yes!” Charina Chou @googlequantumai.bsky.social @semafor.com #sxsw #sxsw2025

Hack the #quantumcomputing hype: “How many qubits are there? We will need 100,000mio+ to get to the applications we want. Look at error rates. Performance. What can be run on this chip? Beyond the benchmark. What are the experts saying?” Charina Chou @googlequantumai.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“So what will we get from this? Will it optimise ads or recommendations?” 😅 Reed Albergotti @semafor.com

“The government needs to step in and play the role of the mediator, diplomacy across industries and countries to build what is going to be a very complex and ambitious project” Charina Chou @googlequantumai.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“The transistor was funded by government research. Quantum computers today are based on basic science and academic research labs. No company or team can do this on its own. Government investment in this is critical.” Charina Chou, COO at @googlequantumai.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“The two types of computing are going to be complementary to each other. #quantumcomputing is yet another tool. It’s not one or the other” Charina Chou, COO at @googlequantumai.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“If I have a robot in my house, it’s from Amazon, Apple, etc. Can I have a robot that actually works for me? I don’t want AI which is trying to sell me something. I don’t want the best deal for the AI. But the best deal for me.” @timbl.bsky.social #SXSW #SXSW2025

“10% of software engineers (or more) have a disability. Hire them! They know how hard it is to play the game! Not to feel good about yourself but as a competitive advantage.” @defenestrate99 @JoshLoebner #SXSW #SXSW2025

Bias is a feature, not a bug. However you work with AI, ask not about the size of the dataset, but about “what’s in the soup?”. Who is represented in this data? “How to make machines see disabled people?” by

“We are misinterpreting, misrepresenting at the start disability within AI.” This is a problem because people need to be understood, heard and it influences predictive modelling. Excellent talk about “How to make machines see disabled people” by Josh Loebner and Jason Carmel at #sxsw2025 #sxsw

Loved this puzzling #VR game to play with a friend or partner as a team solving a mystery from a van and inside a building together! Reminded me a bit of The Room but collaborative and immersive 🤩 Go and try it! At Fairmont until 6pm tonight. @gamesbystitch.bsky.social #sxsw #sxsw2025

“If you are a small company, customer insight is expensive. If you are a large company you have so many customers you haven’t got time to listen to each one. Synthetic data helps with both of those situations. Product teams can do this faster cheaper and better” Oji Odezue, Typeform #sxsw2025 #sxsw

“The power of synthetic data is that we can consider the 1000s of scenarios that it’s impossible to capture. Situations that are too rare or too dangerous to come from real life scenarios. A deer jumping out in front of a car. Rare diseases in healthcare. Etc” Tahir Ekin #sxsw2025 #sxsw

Trends make people feel informed and safe. But seeing the trend curve doesn’t help if you don’t steer into the curve. A lot of change management is about empathy and making people feel comfortable with all the change.” #sxsw

AI doesn’t just reflect the world—it shapes it. Bias in AI isn’t a glitch; it’s a mirror of our own blind spots. But what if we could use AI to bridge the gap of missing data instead? And use it to increase representation and fairness

Would love to hear your thoughts!
