On a footbridge over the A1 as it goes through Newcastle upon Tyne, some mosses and a tiny toadstool for #fungusFriday. Not an especially sharp photo, but I was dog walking at the time. I thought it looked so pretty in the sunshine.

For #PostboxSaturday, a Ponteland postbox sheltering from the rain.

#WildflowerHour One of my #FavouritePlants, photographed this week, is the Dandelion. It's a wonderful Spring flower, but it will flower again and again where it's mowed. It's bright and cheerful, and a great #pollinatorpal, too. This one is providing food for a nice little Hoverfly.

Yes, cap on against the bright sunshine here in North Tyneside!

#WildflowerHour I found two surprises today. The first, looking like a tiny, white snapdragon, only maybe 20cm tall, is completely unfamiliar, and I'm away from my flower book, so no clue if it's wild or feral. The other, not much taller, is a feral Verbena Bonariensis. Any #WildflowerID, please?

#WildflowerHour Some #SeedHead examples for this evening. Spear Thistle, Ragwort (assuming Common, but not sure which), and a Dandelion.

#WildflowerHour This Brassica, whatever it is, looks to me like it's practising to become tumbleweed!

#wildflowerhour Bee on an old Creeping Thistle flowerhead, a different bee on a purple thistle or knapweed type flowehead, and a Holly Blue butterfly on a pale pink Bramble flower.

#wildflowerhour This Great Willowherb looked very striking outlined against the sky in Ponteland Park. It looked more dramatic in real life but I did the best I could with my phone camera

#WildflowerHour Here's a Perennial Sow-Thistle, a #HairyPlant, showing off its hairs against the #BlueSky. I actually photographed it this way because I loved the effect of the sun shining through the yellow petals.

#wildflowerhour Bramble flowers, one with a Comma butterfly on it. I think I read last year that Brambles have many different species/sub-species, so I look at the variety of flowers I see more carefully now. The white flowers has 6 petals, and the pink one has 5, so maybe they're different species?

#WildflowerHour I saw the pink flowers, #WildflowerID please?, today at the coast, Tynemouth, above the beach. The Stinking Iris is in my back garden, self-seeded, and a most welcome plant. The Bramble is in a Newcastle suburb where there's a wonderful green corridor between the housing and the A1.

That's absolutely lovely. I'm so glad to have seen this. Where I walk, I hear wrens singing, at least 2, sometimes deafeningly close, but I only catch glimpses of them through the trees and bushes. This is a wildlife corridor between housing on the left and the A1 on the right, in Newcastle.

#WildflowerHour Three offerings for #PeaFamily challenge this week. I love seeing bees working Clover. The Kidney Vetch was an unexpected treat on a path I seldom walk along. If I'd known it was there I'd have seen it sooner! The Tufted Vetch is the first I've seen this year, a favourite plant.

#wildflowerhour Hadn't realised it was #OrchidChallenge this week, but wildly excited to have seen Northern Marsh Orchid, growing in a front lawn in Newcastle. Only survived because the people were on holiday, or they'd have been mowed. Photo shows one, but colour came out pink not purple, sadly.

#WildflowerHour A few more. Fumitory and Silverweed growing in urban settings, and a Brassica and a Cuckoo flower growing on Rotary Way, Ponteland.
May 25, 2025 at 8:39 PM
#WildflowerHour I found these plants all quite near each other on Rotary Way, Ponteland, but they didn't add up to a show, really. #WildflowerID if anyone knows about Buttercups having paler than usual flowers, please?

#WildflowerHour #treeflowers I think the first is some kind of cherry? And the second definitely is. Growing near the A1 as it passes through Newcastle.

#WildflowerHour So many Dandelions in full flower now! I have finally managed to get a photo of a bumblebee on a Dandelion, too.

Lesser Celandine in the sunshine in my garden. These plants have only been in my garden for a few years, self-sown, and I'm delighted they're there. #WildflowerHour

#WildflowerHour I spotted the pussy willow in the wild nature area by the stream at Wallington Hall, #Northumberland, the #Blackthorn, with just one flower open in #Newcastle, and the Red Dead-nettle at Heddon Welfare Field playground, Heddon-on-the-Wall, #Northumberland.

#WildflowerHour I was surprised to find a Shepherd's Purse in flower a couple of days ago. Nice to see, though.

#WildflowerHour I found a tiny Speedwell and a very small Red Dead-nettle today.

#WildflowerHour #winter #Ponteland #Northumberland Thrilled to see my first Coltsfoot of this year on Friday. Underneath the glass fence outside the leisure centre, library, and schools building

And, in the latest episode of this teeny-tiny saga, on Friday the earwig was gone, but the large catkin remained wrapped around the smaller one. Interesting, but still puzzling.
