Oh come on America, is it really true that you don't use the word boffin? It's such a good word! "Boffins at the University of Wherever have discovered whatever..."

Come on @nytgames.bsky.social what is your word list based on?! The word punnet isn't in there? What the hell do you keep your strawberries in then? #nytspellingbee

It's a bad day to be British on #NYTSpellingBee. So often the American lack nice words that we have.

I've neglected to post any #FoxoftheDay photos recently. Last week one of my resident foxes obligingly curled up next to the crocuses and made it into The Guardian's online Week in Wildlife gallery.

I did the #BigGardenBirdWatch this morning for @rspb.bsky.social while listening to Nick Cave on Desert Island Discs. I had put out seeds and stale bread.

8 pigeons
3 stock doves
3 wood pigeons
1 parakeet
2 robins
2 bluetits
1 magpie
1 wren
2 collared doves

There will be a Long Covid Day of Awareness on 15 March and they're asking for contributions for a banner on strips 6cm x 30cm. I discovered I can do embroidery if both elbows are propped up by multiple cusions. And short thread so you don't have to lift your arm.

I think I can post these screenshots because they're not a spoiler. Had a bit of a cry...

I would love to see a law that all supermarket carparks had to be covered with solar panels and/or green roofing. The supermarkets make billions so they can afford to do it, plus they could use the electricity themselves. It would keeps people's cars cooler on hot days.

These hellebores are open, waiting for the rest to follow. Such a great flower for January.

Here it is, one year ago today, my positive #covid test. I haven't had a day without pain since. I miss being able to walk places, cycle, go to galleries, travel, or do gardening. I miss my job. This has happened to thousands of other people and many have much worse symptoms than I do.

As I was a bit ill I mostly stayed near St Paul's, catching Little Amal and also Juliet Stevenson and Brian Eno. Then I took the tube and did some shots at Embankment where the huge crowd marched peacefully under the footbridge. Went home early, edited and uploaded.

One year ago today, on 13 January 2024, I photographed a huge demonstration in support of the people of Gaza and the rest of Palestine. I felt like I had a cold but a lateral flow test came up negative for covid. Just in case, I wore a mask on the tube. 🧵

Last summer the cubs got hold of a Peter Rabbit belonging to one of next door's kids. Rabbit lost an eye before I found him, so I returned him with a home-made eye patch!

You know how people decry social media and games on mobile phones because people get hooked by constant tiny dopamine hits?
I was going to cook my dinner 40 minutes ago. Maybe jigsaws should be banned.

I just went to make a coffee and found this happening. Love those fluffy guys.

2024 was undoubtedly the Year of the Fox for me, watching 5 cubs grow up in my garden. Part of the reason I was able to watch so much is that I was too ill to go out and take photos. After 11 healthy days, I got ill with covid on 12 January and then... just stayed ill. 🧵 1/3

@zoesqwilliams.bsky.social hi Zoe, hope you're well. I emailed you about hypocrisy of UKHSA, who set covid vaccine policy. In the meantime, please could you share this petition? No-one should have to pay £70 to £100 to keep themselves safe from covid. Thanks! petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

Fuming at this tweet from UKHSA. No-one in this picture would be eligible for a free jab unless they were immuno-supressed, eg from chemo. So these women would have to pay £70 to £100. Who has that spare? Long covid can ruin a life at any age. Sign and share! petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...

I'm on my 34th book of the year. There are 48 here and 2 more being delivered tomorrow. Shall I attempt to empty the stack by the end of 2025? Although long covid has messed me up I am lucky that I can still read. Some sufferers have such bad cognitive problems they can't. Awful disease.

Highest achievement: one of my photos getting used on the poster for an exhibition at Photofusion in Brixton. Work from the previous year, taken while cycling round Clapham Common, which would be impossible for me now. Covid has made me disabled and no-one wants to do anything about it any more.
