Here for instance is a reconstruction of a different Mycenaean throne room: www.brown.edu/Departments/... It's not entirely accurate, but the colour scheme and style are much closer than the above. Also, there are definitely no known Mycenaean frescos of elephants in any colour

Looking at reconstructions of Mycenaean palaces online for teaching purposes and my absolute "favourite" has to be this one. Just...wow, spot the problems with this view of the megaron at Mycenae? (A real elephant in the room...) 🏺

Aha, the New Pauly has produced the first reference so far!
By contrast with today's gourmets, people apparently did not enjoy eating the legs (Varro in Columella 8,16,4). Dioscorides (2,26 Wellmann 1,130f. = 2,28 Berendes 162) recommends them boiled in a broth with salt and oil as an antidote to snake venom, among other things.

I have rarely wanted more details of the backstory to a blogpost as badly as I do for this. Specifically what language this was. (I assume probably Latin, but really want it to be something really obscure like Sumerian)

4. The dead language I work in museums. Another museum in our region had a staff member who kept all their crucial records – important not just for day-to-day work, but for the continuity of the entire institution – in a dead language that they were fluent in. It was a deliberate ploy to keep from ever being replaced. They had never actually been managed before a colleague of mine became their supervisor, and when they refused to change, they were let go and the records had to be translated.
