After the May federal election, Australia’s federal parliament has almost reached gender parity. By my calculations the House of Representatives in the 48th Parliament will be 46% women and the Senate 56.6% women. The Parliament as a whole will be 49.6% women.

Three years after the Jenkins report, there is still work to be done on improving parliament culture.

Excellent article by Maria Maley of ANU. As someone who has experienced the worst of that culture I know firsthand how much work remains to be done. /1

Three years after the Jenkins report, there is still work to be done on improving parliament culture
Since the release of the “Set the Standard” report in 2021, there has been a flurry of activity in response. But some of it may not be as effective as it could be.

White men are apparently terrified of doing the wrong thing at work.

Based on personal experience, white men can (‘allegedly’) sexually assault, bully & discriminate against women at work - including in parliament - and face zero consequences. Relax guys. /1

Culture of parliament 'has improved’, say politicians.

That’s not what I hear from the staff who still regularly call me seeking help after being bullied, discriminated against, harassed or sexually assaulted. Some are suicidal. /1

Congratulations to @larissawaters.bsky.social on her election as leader of the Australian Greens.

When I sought help after being ‘allegedly’ bullied and discriminated against at Parliament House after disclosing past ‘alleged’ sexual assaults, including rape, Larissa helped me. /1
