My oldest kid just got his restricted drivers licence and drove himself home alone. I get this text:

Woke up at 4 am, couldn’t get back to sleep. Today is my last kid’s last day at school.

They are at the same high school I went to and my mum was the head of science at. I met my husband there. I’ve been connected to Logan Park High School since 1987, when mum started there.

This is surreal.

At our place (we have plenty more trees that didn’t fall over though)

In a whole new level of absent-mindedness, I suddenly realised I was filling out two sudoku puzzles simultaneously **without noticing**

Ours came from this paper lantern in the Dunedin Midwinter Carnival, 2016

Great news from the NZ game development sector rebate folks!

We made it to Singapore, though apparently I’m lucky not to have been arrested for ignoring the nice cabin crew member, pushing past her and leaving at the tail end of the rich people because we had 10 minutes to make our connection.

Pratchett’s description of airports has never felt so apt

The mallard ducklings in Dunedin are brown with yellow patches, so in our family we call them bumbleducks

London would be way more fun the arthritis in my foot wasn’t flaring excruciatingly thanks to the change in weather

Sam went for a walk while I had a nap

Turns out we’re just about as far from home as it’s possible to be

Actual conversion in the gelato shop near the Rhein just now: “two scoops of that one, please”
“Two scoops…in your HANNDD???”

The sass

German customer service is something else

And when I say people-ful, I’m talking about this. Apparently this is a quiet day for gamescom. Saturday is usually “shoulder room only”

Gamescom day 2 is done and I have blisters. We found the Hooded Horse stall and met our two closest contact from there, Matthias and Joe.

It was a very people-ful day!

Sam and I visited the public area afterwards and it was what everyone told us it would be: overwhelmingly large and busy. Highlights:
- Hanging out with our neighbours
- Finding a game based on the Gogol’s story “The Nose”—very weird, very artistic and high concept. I hope it does well!
- Gifflar.

Gamescom day 1 is over, apart from tonight’s publisher dinner (which I’m really looking forward to).

On the bright side, if we’d stayed on the train I wouldn’t have seen this cool building
August 18, 2025 at 8:14 PM
It’s a real worry when the only words you understand of the train announcement, while you wait at an unexpectedly protracted halt, are “long torpedo gun”
August 18, 2025 at 6:07 PM
Gamescom, we are on our way! Changi Airport’s butterfly house is cool but @tuhura.bsky.social’s is cooler

A proper #dunnerstunner the day before we leave for Gamescom. I’ll take it
