again, this is not, to be clear, a celebration of MTG. this is a consideration of what her behavior can help show us about the world

right, her very existence was given and taken as prima facie evidence for a culture wars campaign by the trump campaign and a (receptive? credulous? similarly inclined?) media environment

she very clearly is changing her behavior. that doesn’t mean she’s changing her beliefs.

I know she’s an untrustworthy supremacist guys it’s literally written out in the thread

as I say up there explicitly, we have no reason to think she’s stopped being the worse kind of racist or bigot or antisemite

It is genuinely good to have someone apologize for this kind of behavior and say they were wrong

What lies do people tell, what hypocrisies do they perpetuate: these tell us something about the underlying value structure people reflect, and about the kinds of space and possibility for action you have to help uphold those values if they matter to you

*this isn’t my area of study but if I were imagining a European-style hard right, hard nativist party with a more competent administrative capability might make some headway in the US, I’d imagine someone like MTG could sell it

To put it another way, we don’t have to trust her (and shouldn’t)* to think she knows which way the wind is blowing, and how weak this regime and movement are
