Like a lot of things, it had started small. Simon noticed it one Wednesday when, whilst performing his routine chores, he had chanced to look up. A crack sat on the wall in front of him, a thin black line set against the white plaster. It was almost imperceptible, yet Simon frowned anyway. He pursed his lips into their own tight line. "I shall sort that." He resolved. But he did not. Weeks passed, and the crack grew. Inch by inch. Simon would see the progress, and tut. Or he would sigh, and mumble to himself that he really ought to deal with that crack. It annoyed him to have a blemish anywhere, but especially so on his clean plastered wall. But there was something more. He didn't like to admit it, not even to himself, but Simon was afraid of the crack. Because a part of him sensed, deep down, that there was something inside the crack. Not within the wall. No, Simon was quite sure there was nothing untoward inside the walls of his house, thank you very much. Instead, Simon could sense that there was something beyond the crack in his wall. Something dark and urgent. So he carried on with his routine, tutting and sighing and mumbling, and all the while the crack grew. Then, one Sunday Simon was putting the finishing touches on a cake, pretty pale pink and white icing near-incandescent upon his table. He placed down his spatula, sighing contentedly at his detailed work. His eyes fell upon the wall, it's blemish now the height of a man. He sighed again, discontentedly. There was a moment of perfect silence, two and a half heartbeats long. The crack opened.
