Frank Delaney's podcast might help you get through some of it, though he passed away before finishing. My wife and I do a blog/podcast called bloomsandbarnacles.com - we'll soon be crossing the Frank Delaney boundary. She breaks down a lot of the puzzles.

Current Irish Taoiseach for Life, Michael Martin, is 100% like this, a deathgrip on his party, who are incapable of removing the shite, but not ONE meaningful thing to his name in decades.

Thank god it's these adults in the room running things, not those student-politics Trots.

"but we inherited such a mess"

says the same party that inherited an even bigger one in 1945, but which was somehow able to build the NHS/welfare state.

Tough men. If only there was a war somewhere in Europe where they could fly to and take part in, to prove their manliness.

People will be nostalgic for 2020 one day. Then again, Brits in the 70s were already getting nostalgic about the Blitz. Easy to be nostalgic about almost anything.

The people today yearn for "the white heat of technology!"

I think there was a temporary boost as the new owners got the benefit of all the stuff that was done the hard way, but give those arses a few decades of malign neglect, running down infrastructure, and.... well, rivers of shit, literally.

Harold MacMillan famously said that Thatcher's privatisation was "like selling the family silver".

North Sea oil floated her hideous experiment. IIRC @ one point it was 10% of global supply. Alaska's Prudhoe Bay did similar for Reagan. NS peaked in 1999, downhill ever since, doesn't matter how fast they pump the dregs. NS, responsibly extracted could have kept the UK stable for a century.

Oops

Note the framing: "on the slide since the Corbyn era". Chums, it began to slide AFTER he was gone. It began to slide "since the STARMER era".

Anyone to the left of Reeves is a Trot now. Watch out, friends of Miliband & Burnham, you're next.

Actually unwell people.

But yeah, getting back to Sloane's point, there's something wrong with people in power, the emails are eye-openers, Larry Summer's wife cooing about Lolita with Epstein, dear god.

This one sucks: my birthday (1969) is closer in time to the start of WW1 than it is to today.
