Frank Delaney's podcast might help you get through some of it, though he passed away before finishing. My wife and I do a blog/podcast called bloomsandbarnacles.com - we'll soon be crossing the Frank Delaney boundary. She breaks down a lot of the puzzles.

I think there was a temporary boost as the new owners got the benefit of all the stuff that was done the hard way, but give those arses a few decades of malign neglect, running down infrastructure, and.... well, rivers of shit, literally.

North Sea oil floated her hideous experiment. IIRC @ one point it was 10% of global supply. Alaska's Prudhoe Bay did similar for Reagan. NS peaked in 1999, downhill ever since, doesn't matter how fast they pump the dregs. NS, responsibly extracted could have kept the UK stable for a century.
