After Wakker Dier’s success in challenging the Dutch Government for lack of enforcement of EU Transport Regulation 1/2005, where the Court ruled that the law should be enforced, UK animal groups decided to make similar arguments, as the same law applied here.

The UK government has recognised that under WTO rules it can restrict imports on animal welfare grounds if the practice also falls foul of domestic legislation, which many Indian practices would.

Without clear domestic legislation prohibiting such practices in the UK, it will be difficult to restrict imports produced in these ways, even when they fall far below the expectations of the British public.

However, there are serious concerns about welfare practices in some 🇮🇳 production systems, which this agreement is set to increase, particularly prawn and cattle farming and leather production, where methods such as eyestalk ablation, inhumane slaughter and poor transport conditions remain common

It is encouraging that the deal reaffirms the UK’s right to uphold its own high standards through preventing any dilution of our existing protections and restricting imports on animal welfare grounds in compliance with World Trade Organisation rules.
