Call for papers: 5th International Workshop of the Amdo Research Network. Folklorist Henry Glassie defines tradition as "making the future out of the past." From this perspective, we might argue that communities around the world craft their futures with recourse to previously existing cultural resources alongside the dynamic conditions (and restrictions) of the present. As Amdo Tibetans try to imagine and craft their futures within and beyond the People's Republic of China, resources of the past— including but not limited to religious practices, governance structures, festivals and foodways, oral and literary traditions, and artisanry—all play an important role in what people consider possible. For this meeting of the Amdo Research Network, we invite papers examining Amdo from these and other perspectives. Potential areas for discussion could include: -The representation of Amdo traditions in modern media; -Cultural practices in urbanizing communities; -Traditionalization and Amdo Tibetan language practices; --Connections between historical and contemporary writing practices; --Historical political and religious practices and their place in contemporary Amdo; --The activities of religious communities past and present; --Emerging trends in Amdo Tibetan religious and secular thought; and more We should note that contributions do not necessarily need to address the question of futures, as better understanding Amdo's pasts and traditions will help to understand what its futures may look like. Our third 2024 #ANHS Fellow is PhD student Amrit Tamang, whose project "Re-centering Indigenous Tamang Labor in Nepal's Mountaineering/Trekking Industry" studies the relationship of the #Tamang community with global #tourism and infrastructure in #Nepal.

Hi! We’re new here. We’e a professional society for scholars of all disciplines who focus on Nepal and the broader Himalaya—including Tibet, Sikkim, Bhutan, and Ladakh.
