Zoos are fundamentally carnist institutions of animal incarceration, confinement and exploitation. A zoo may “take good care” of the animals it holds captive, or try to be “more ethical” in its operations, but it still exists for purposes diametrically opposed to animal liberation.

The zoo as an architectural project is carnistic. The vegan alternative to this would be nature observatories in nature preserves or parks, where animals are free to exist in their native habitats, on their own terms, and not imprisoned or controlled for human viewing.

Nothing sadder than a puppet who thinks he’s better than other puppets just because he looks real.

Our role in the ecosystem cannot and should not be a fixed unchanging thing when our population, technology and ability to transform our environment and the habitats of our fellow earthlings has changed so much.

Also there are creatures that exist in ecosystems that don’t kill other animals for food, i.e. herbivores, many insects, etc. Human beings can still be a part of the ecosystem, and still be food for creatures after we die, without causing suffering to sentient creatures.

Veganism isn’t saying no interference in the ecosystem tho… it calls for more animal centric view of the environment, one where animals exist not for us but along side us, where their needs and desires are considered.

The ecosystem was not made to support 8 billion humans. Human population in a more “natural” setting was much less than a billion. No ecosystem is sustainable with a population of predators that outweighs that ecosystems ability to sustain prey populations. This is literally why factory farms exist.

This is just a repackaged version of the carnist justification “meat is necessary”. To say killing animals for food is unnecessary and harmful doesn’t mean opposition to indigenous foodways in entirety. It’s not racist to recognize that culture is not a justification for harm or cruelty.

Unfortunately the client hired someone to “clear” the land, who even cut down all the trees before we got to tell him not to.
