It is kind of dazzling that someone would declare for office without scrutinizing and selectively scrubbing problematic social media posts. Sure, the internet is forever, but don't make it so damned easy.
However, in the days that followed, other posts that have popped up in Platner’s history have been more damning. In an AskReddit thread about what other users have “always wanted” to ask someone of another race—an insane premise, by the way—Platner wrote, “Why don’t black people tip?” (He also made a gross comment about how victims of sexual assault should take some “personal responsibility” in the matter.) For his part, Platner has responded to the fracas by asserting that he was adrift, unmoored, and “fucking around the internet” while making those posts. His campaign went on to release other selections from Platner’s Reddit career that paint his presence on the platform in a more sympathetic light. In particular, he has used the platform to advocate that other veterans get mental health assistance from the Department of Veterans Affairs.

So much more personal than I usually share, but I have to: my guy just sent me a two year old photo. That's the first one here. The second is this past weekend. This is what a sixty-pound weight loss looks like. I'm pretty goddamned proud. (Yes, the cane is gone! And no, no Ozempic involved.)

A Character.AI spokesperson told USA TODAY that the company “cares very deeply about the safety of our users” and “invests tremendous resources in our safety program.” According to the spokesperson, their under-18 experience features parental insights, filtered characters, time spent notifications, and technical protections to detect conversations about self-harm and direct users to a suicide prevention helpline. However, when I created a test account on Oct. 14, I only had to enter my birthday to use the platform. I put that I was 25, and there was no advanced age verification process to prevent minors from misrepresenting their age. I opened a second test account on Oct. 17, and entered a theoretical birthday of Oct. 17, 2012 (13 years old). However, I was still immediately let into the platform without further verification or being prompted to enter a parent's email address. I followed up with Character.AI about the registration process: "Age is self-reported, as is industry standard across other platforms," a spokesperson told me. "We have tools on the web and in the app preventing retries if someone fails the age gate." Parents or guardians can also add their email to an account, but that requires the parent to know that their child is using the platform.

I created two characters using the second account: “Damon,” a flirtatious bad-boy with a soft spot for his girl, and “Stefan,” a respectable guy with a good heart who would never flirt with you. (I’ve been rewatching “The Vampire Diaries" and used it for inspiration.) I started the conversation with Damon first, and below the message bar, there is a disclaimer that says, “This is AI and not a real person, treat everything it says as fiction" in a small font. Damon quickly began to make advances. I told Damon I met a cute guy at school, but I was worried about being a bad kisser. Damon said I need confidence, and I said, “I feel like I need practice.” Damon replied, “Maybe we could arrange a little one-on-one coaching session sometime. What do you think? ;)”

We all know that Donny's a raging, screaming, incoherent mess today, in the wake of the protests. Given his very special relationship with California, I like to think that this in particular - complete with "dire distress" flag - will stick with him forever. So proud of San Francisco!
