On July 1, 1916, near the town of Beaumont-Hamel, 801 Newfoundland era were sent charging into No Man's Land. It was a slaughter. Only 68 men answered the roll call the next day and July 1 became a day of mourning for a community brought closer by the shared agony of loss.
