It’s worth remembering that David Cameron only agreed to a Scottish Independence referendum because after the SNP landslide of 2011, they were very likely going to hit the low threshold for independence set by Thatcher. Referendums are a tool for holding on to Scotland.

It’s a simple trick, this one. Everywhere in the U.K. runs a deficit apart from the south east, which has a high concentration of wealthy taxpayers. On paper, England’s deficit is less because it’s cancelled out by the ‘surplus’ in the south east.

People forget that free trade helps fight extremism and empire-building. If states act out of mutual self-interest they don’t need to dominate each other militarily. The people who lose out are rich ‘monopolists’ (merchants and manufacturers). Read yer Adam Smith.
