Cash shop items are definitely on a set release schedule and rotation of what new items are being added outside of last year's seasonal items and now hairstyles. Plus they have said the cash shop is handled by a different group so not much the main team can do about it.

It could also be that there feels like there has been a shift in many more modern anime stories. The pacing and method of plot progression often feels either slower or more rushed than in past years. And of course some stroies feel like they have been overdone and bring nothing new with a retelling.
