Two huge losses to the world of letters: Kenya's Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o passed away on 28 May. American novelist & memoirist Edmund White died on 3 June. I met and interviewed them both at the Festa Literária Internacional de Paraty, in Brazil. Ed was also a generous mentor and teacher.

Great to see @economist.com including Han Kang in its list of best books of 2025 so far but… would it have been so difficult to name her translators Emily Yae Won and Paige Aniyah Morris, too? #namethetranslator
