I was a junior in high school when i was forced to read this book. I appreciated the story told. Sympathized with their plight.... But could not get past, or over rather, the chapter of the turtle crossing the road!!! It haunts me to this day.

If you are paying attention, and pouring your will and energy into that cutting, you shouldn't be idly be sitting by waiting. You should be focused and aware at all times.

Exactly. The whole purpose of burning the cord is to make certain it is permanently severed. Cauterized if you will. Everyone is going to practice differently. And if you are doing what you're supposed to be doing, it's not a fire risk.
